Roses, 1872

Oil on canvas

Harmsworth Bequest through The Art Fund, 1990

Fantin-Latour is best known for his paintings of roses. He selected the best blooms available from the weekly flower markets near his studio on the Rue des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His still life paintings are not only aesthetic delights, they are also botanically accurate, demonstrating the artist's acute powers of observation.

This painting is on loan to the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle in County Durham for the first major British exhibition devoted to the artist's still lifes. 'Fantin-Latour & the Impressionists' continues until 9 October 2011.
